OBIT:  Mr. Merriman was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5224 in Decatur, Ill. He was a 38-year Army veteran. He retired in July 2008 as a sergeant major.

Doc Sheehan of the Elgin VFW Post 1307 was named August’s veteran of the month by the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs. He attributes the honor to a great team working beside him while he was commander from 2009-2012.

Special court for veterans

In 2009, Gov. Pat Quinn signed into a law a bill creating the veterans courts program. The law is modeled after pilot programs in Cook and Madison counties.

Veterans Cash lottery ticket helps seven non-profits deliver support programs to veterans
Instant ticket responsible for more than $330,000 in grants this quarter

First-quarter (FY13) grants have been awarded to the following organizations:

• Carpenter’s Place (Rockford)—$18,406 for rehabilitation of a home for previously homeless veterans including installation of new appliances.
• Family Alliance (Woodstock)—$2,000 to provide day care services for elderly veterans in McHenry, Boone, Kane, and Lake counties.
• The Impact Center (Washington, D.C.)—$46,500 to develop an online platform for public and non-profit organizations throughout Illinois which serve military members, veterans, and their families; the platform will improve collaboration and transparency in military and veteran support.
• The Salvation Army (Springfield)—$50,600 for the organization’s Veterans Assistance Program to support Sangamon County’s homeless veteran population by offering food, shelter, clothing, counseling, employment counseling, and commercial kitchen job training.
• Thresholds (Chicago)—$68,892 for the organization’s Veterans Project that supports homeless veteran outreach, employment services, and combat trauma/mental health therapies, housing, medical care, and education.
• TLS Veterans (McHenry)—$43,787 to purchase two vehicles to transport their residents (previously homeless veterans) to medical appointments, jobs, and other activities.
• VFW, Department of Illinois (Springfield)—$100,000 to assist Illinois veterans with the application process for federal disability claims and other benefit programs.

Hometown Hero~ Welcome Home Cpl Charles S Ligon, USA West Frankfort, IL.   He was severely injured in the Kahs Kunar Province, Afghanistan on December 11, 2011. He is an amputee on his left leg & has a limb salvage on the right leg, has some loss of vision in his left eye, suffered 2nd degree burns along with other injuries & mild TBI. He has been in Brooke Army Medical Center since December 16, 2011.

He will be there until March of 2013. He will be coming home for a 24 day leave on Tuesday, July 31st.   IL PGR escorted him from Lambert Airport.
