Comment by Peggy Foster Barker on December 11, 2012 at 12:47am IMPORTANT: Department Adjutants and/or Quartermasters please pass this information onto your Posts. Make sure you also forward the attached PDF file which contains detailed instructions on how to apply.
The Home Depot (HD) has just opened their final Community Impact Grants cycle for 2012 which will be in effect from November 12 through December 12, 2012.
VFW Posts can receive up to $5,000 to fix up their buildings. Although of course there are no guarantees (so please be mindful of that) I encourage all Posts to apply ASAP if there is a need for Post building improvement.
To begin the process, click on the following link:
http://homedepotfoundation.org/page/applying-for-a-grant
Under the heading of “Community Impact Grants Program” go to click “here” to apply for a grant
You will complete this application directly via the Internet only (no telephone calls to HD, emails or written submissions will be accepted nor will you be able to turn this application in at your local HD store).
PLEASE OPEN AND CAREFULLY READ THE PDF ATTACHMENT TO THIS EMAIL AS IT WILL WALK YOU STEP-BY-STEP THROUGH THE PROCESS. We have tried to make the instructions as simple as possible. Any deviation from this guide will most likely result in not being able to submit the application.
ALSO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE TAX ID INSTRUCTIONS SECTION. You will use the Employee Identification Number (EIN) of your Post and upload the Post’s 501(c)(19) IRS determination letter at the end of the application.
If you receive funding it will come in the form of Home Depot gift cards that can be used to buy materials at your local HD store. You will need to recruit Post members or other community volunteers to do the work. The project must be completed within a reasonable time frame (usually less than 6 months though the sooner the better). You will also be required to complete a final report. Failure to do so will negatively impact your Post’s ability to receive any future funding from The Home Depot.
After submission of the application, you should receive a written email response usually in six weeks letting you know if you received the grant.
I wish each of you the BEST OF LUCK!
Should you have any questions and or concerns, please contact Richard Freiburghouse, VFW Foundation Manager of Grants Development at (816) 968-1124 or rfreiburghouse@vfw.org

State Agencies Remind Veterans of Designation on Driver’s Licenses
CHARLESTON, W.Va.
-Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Joe Miller and West Virginia Department of Veteran’s Assistance Cabinet Secretary Keith Gwinn would like to remind citizens that the Veteran’s designation is now available on driver’s licenses.
Commissioner Miller said, "We are thrilled to offer this designation to our Veterans! We unveiled the new designation last month in Parkersburg, and the response has been tremendous." Cabinet Secretary Gwinn added, "West Virginians genuinely support and appreciate our country's Veterans and are always eager to give back to them in any way they can. There are a number of organizations and businesses throughout the state that offer Veterans special discounts and incentives, however, most have no way of confirming an individual's military service. That is why having your Veteran status designated right on your driver's license is so important. Finally our Veterans have a convenient way to take advantage of the benefits they need and deserve."
To obtain the Veteran’s designation, applicants need to apply at their local DMV regional office and bring in their DD 214, another form of military identification, or their motor vehicle registration card showing a current military license plate. There is no charge if the designation is the only transaction being sought at the time.
In addition to a military form of identification, applicants will need to bring in the applicable licensing documentation required since January 3, 2012, per the REAL ID Act of 2005. Those documents are outlined as follows:
If applicant HAS NOT received a license or ID since January 3, 2012:
o
One proof of identity
o
One proof of social security
o
Two proofs of residency
o
Any name change documents to establish a link in the applicant’s identity
If applicant HAS received a license or ID on January 3, 2012 or after:
o
One proof of residency
Commissioner Miller encourages all applicants to call the DMV Call Center at 1-800-642-9066 or visit the DMV web site at
www.dmv.wv.gov with any questions before going to a regional office. "Our focus is customer service, and we want our customers to have a pleasant and efficient visit to the DMV. Our fully-staffed Call Center and website are both great information resources to ensure that all of the necessary documents are in place before going to the DMV."
Veterans may also contact the Department of Veteran’s Assistance by visiting the web site at www.veterans.wv.gov.

Comment by William B. Bradley on June 1, 2012 at 1:13am Grace and Peace! Thank you for allowing me to join your online group. I am currently a member of post 1212 in Parkersburg but will be moving to Clarksburg in July and looking for a post to transfer too there. I will be starting work at that time at the Clarksburg VAMC also. I am a veteran of the US Army who served on active duty from 1980-1991 (Operation Desert Storm). I reenlisted in the US Army Reserve in 2010 and am presently serving in the 779th Engr. Co. (HORZ). We are attending ECT from 5-29 June and upon returning I will be moving and starting at the VAMC. I would love to correspond with anyone from the Clarksburg area who could reccomend a good post to join and get active in. (Plus I sure could use some help moving, lol!) Anyway, its great to be aboard! God Bless you all!
