Group plans Purple Heart memorial at Oak Ridge

A new memorial to honor U.S. service members who have been injured in combat is in the works for Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The Springfield-based Hayes-Krell Memorial Chapter 159 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart will raise money for the memorial, which will be installed in the war memorial section of Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Sherman resident John Lazell, commander of the Hayes-Krell chapter, said officials haven’t settled on a design, but he estimated the memorial will be a little larger than a grave marker.

“This monument is special in that it is going to reach out across time to all the wars and all the conflicts. It’s what we might call an all-inclusive monument to those who have been wounded in the service of our country,” Lazell said.

The Hayes-Krell chapter is raising all of the funds for the memorial.

Lazell estimated it will take one to two years to raise the money. The estimated cost has not been determined.

Anyone wanting to donate can call Lazell at 725-4984.
