I think that vfw is def heading toward the majority riders that still can especially since entering the korean war, and vietnam war eras as well as modern conflicts and alot rather excercise thier freedom to ride. Dues like any other would naturally be included in whatever dues already collected. With all the other fund raiser and recruiter activities. Thats pretty much my two cents on the matter.

not really sure where the right to wear cross came from, but I was addressing the comment of paying dues to vfw and any $ at all to vfw, though people can certianly donate if they want too, vfw is not affliated with any riders groups that I know of  let alone demand any $, though there is alot of riders that are members of the vfw. You can get the riders vest patches right out the catalog. I just dont think vfw demands or even cares about the dues though wouldnt suprise me that it will happen one day.

Kim is 100% correct.  As a member of the VFW you have the RIGHT the wear the Cross of Malta.  The only thing that National did, on Aug 29th, 2011, was grandfather the California VFW-MC as the only MC allowed to wear the Cross of Malta.  Because of a few numskulls in other states who thought they were Sons of Anarchy and wore the Cross of Malta as part of their MC Colors, National was ready to do away with ALL MC's.  Our Department went to bat for us and we now celebrate Aug 29th annually.  But they never mentioned Riders Clubs, which is what most VFW groups are anyways.

Personally I think having an a Post/District/Department Riders Club is a fantastic way to get positive exposure for the VFW while providing a hook to attract a lot of the younger Vets to join and STAY involved with the VFW.

I also wish that National would allow more VFW-MC's but I think that time isn't here yet...

from what I understand and read is just a group that is seperate and as a vfw member you can wear back patch and post # but in no way obligated in funding vfw as it not even part the organization the member might be who happens to ride as an activity says right in the official document.

Good morning all,

I'm a newbie to this site and am still looking for a Post to become a Rider member-at-large for since in my initial search there is not a post close to me here in KY.  I haven't had a chance to read all the information that i'm finding on the web, but if someone knows the procedures for this action, I'd appreciate it any info you have.

Dan,

Sounds like a great way for the RC to protect itself while at the time staying involved in the VFW chain of command.

We have had some Posts that weren't too happy to have us around at first but almost all of them, if not all, have come to realize how valuable motorcycles are in recruiting and MAINTAINING younger vets.

Keep up the good work and remember to keep the rubber down and ride safe!!!

All,

In Arizona we had the State Council of Administration adopt the VFW Rider Committee as a standing committee.  By doing so, the State Commander can not dispose of the Riders at a whim, it must be done by the CofA at a regularly scheduled meeting.  In addition, we run at the District level for many reasons. At our District conventions we have adopted the VFW Rider Committees as a standing committee (again the Commander now needs all of the Post Commanders agree to disband us).   We did this as a means of protection so we are protected frrom a Commander getting rid of us on a whim.  All District Rider Committees run under one SOP - our State SOP that has been approved by State and National.  In addition, Arizona has decreed that the Riders funds are a restricted account, and while we go through the Quartermaster, the Quartermaster can only expend our funds on what is in the minutes for the Riders meeting.  So we operate in accordance w/ national by-laws and policies and still function as an independent operating committee.
