Military Service History
Sergeant First Class James Wheeler Hammontree was transferred to the United States Army Reserve Control Group (Retired) on 1 August 2016, after 21 active and 23 total years of federal military service.
SFC Hammontree’s hometown is Pleasant Hill, Missouri. He entered the United States Army on 26 May 1993, attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

SFC Hammontree’s assignments include: Treatment Team Aidman, Line Medic, Ambulance Driver, and Senior Line Medic with 1-87 Infantry at Fort Drum, New York; Aid Station Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge and Senior Evacuation Sergeant with 1-17 Infantry at Fort Wainwright, Alaska; Physical Examinations Sergeant at the Chicago Military Entrance Processing Station, Des Plaines, Illinois; Public Health Technician with 932d Aerospace Medicine Flight at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois; Intelligence Sergeant with 2-6 Infantry and Intelligence Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge with 3-4 Infantry at Baumholder, Germany; Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant with B Company, 305th Military Intelligence Battalion at Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Senior Enlisted Leader and Senior Intelligence Sergeant with United States Army Element, Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar; Deputy Branch Chief, Combating Extremist Research and Development, Central Security Service, and Senior Intelligence Sergeant with 704th Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Meade, Maryland.

His operational and combat experience includes deployments to Haiti, Panama, Oman, Pakistan, Iraq and the Arabian Gulf.

SFC Hammontree’s military and civilian education includes: Jungle Warfare, Commandant’s List at Primary Leadership Development, Medical Basic Non-Commissioned Officer, Intelligence Analyst Advanced Leadership, Intelligence Counteraction of Terrorism, Battle Staff Non-Commissioned Officer, Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant, Master Resiliency Trainer, and Military Intelligence Senior Leadership Courses.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree, magna cum laude, in Applied Management and Associate’s Degrees in Intelligence Operations and Public Health Technology.

SFC Hammontree’s awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Services Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Citation, Air Force Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal (1 Silver Knot), Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (1 Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (2 Bronze Stars), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (1 Bronze Star), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (M Device), Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 4), Expert Field Medical Badge, Driver’s Badge for Wheeled and Tracked vehicles, Marskmanship Badge for Rifle and Pistol, Combat Service Identification Badge, the Österreichisches Sport-und Turnabzeichen (ÖSTA – Austrian Sports Badge) and the Military Intelligence Corps Association’s Lt. He is married to Kristin Gail nee Barney and they have a daughter, Gail Laurelin Hammontree. They make their home in South Middleton Township, Pennsylvania.
