Welcome Walt & Thank You for your service.
Short of getting in my car & driving to other Posts, I find it easy to make friends in VFW by attending District Meetings.
Once upon a time, many years ago, as an Officer (In Line) of a Masonic Lodge, I suggested we should get a group together and visit other Juristrictions.
It was suggested I handle the details & I did. We discovered there were Military Masonic Lodges that were created in various wars by men serving out of country or state. They met in Grand Lodge Apartments. Read > VFW Department Headquarters<.
We did this regularly and as travel was frequently out of state we were able to fill two (2) 37 passenger busses. There were very few "YOUNG" WW2 Vets who missed our trips.
Just a thought. Not enough guys left today to fill a golf cart.

If this link works it describes a Lodge in Colblenz, Germany (1918) that operated with permission of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island. We visited that Lodge (Overseas Lodge # 40). One of our member's Dad had attended that Lodge during WW 1.
A different view?
