Melanie Calvert Benton, (aka) “Melanie D. Calvert,” “Dahlia Patton” is a retired respiratory care practitioner who now works with her first loves, photography and writing. While running a successful photography business for years, she only recently turned to writing a novel through the urgings of her husband Western Fiction Writer W.R. Benton. Melanie’s photography has appeared on the covers of all four of Mister Benton’s "The Drum Series" and soon will be gracing her own books. Her first historical novel, "A Southern Moon Rising," was released in July 2008.

An avid outdoorswoman, she enjoys deer hunting, fishing, camping, Citizen Band Radio and of course, outdoor photography. She prefers the smell of wood smoke, the crackling of a fire late at night, and the serenity of nature, to a fast-paced life in a big city. Melanie is a supporter for empowering women from all walks of life. Born and raised in Mississippi, most of it on a farm, she is a true Southern Belle.

Memorial Day Tribute: "Remembering William"

Posted on May 24, 2009 at 5:55pm 3 Comments

My search for any civil war relatives started over three months ago. I wanted to become a member of the UDC ( United Daughters of the Confederacy) because I am a Southern woman by birth and because of the fact I write about and photograph civil war reenactments. The journey started out like any other, finding those facts that would associate me with a family member who served as a Confederate soldier. After speaking with my uncle Gary Calvert, I visited the Mississippi Department of Archives… Continue

Are You Physically Fit To Hunt?

Posted on October 18, 2008 at 6:08pm 0 Comments

I waited a few days to post this entry, because I didn't know exactly how to bring up the topic of being physically fit for the upcoming deer season. I, myself cannot wait to get out into the woods, hoping for that elusive buck to come my way and try to harvest him. I love, live and breathe for deer season, but alas I am getting older and in past years I didn't worry about my health as much as I now. I am nearing fifty and have a few health concerns and my body reminds me about it… Continue

How to Prepare for the Coming Depression

Posted on October 18, 2008 at 6:04pm 0 Comments

I'm no financial expert, anyone with access to my bank statements would quickly

agree, but I see rough times ahead for all Americans. With the uncertainty of

the stock market, home foreclosures, and with most food, along with gasoline, prices

rising, it's time for us to take steps to assure our survival during the uncertain

times ahead.

In event of the total collapse of our economy, which I pray will not

happen, things will turn rough as the "have nots"… Continue

I very much enjoyed my visit to the SimpleSurvival website and am sending the URL to another Air Force (retired) friend.
I do have interest in survival (emergency preparedness) from several perspectives.
1. I've already implemented the food storage aspect as called for on Gary's website. You know what? For the life of me I simply cannot figure out why, just before an impending disaster, people crowd the grocery stores... hoping there's still food on the shelves. What I can't figure out is... not why they do it, but the fact that they are doing it AGAIN, because that's exactly what they did the LAST TIME just before an impending disaster. This means they didn't 'wise up' and start establishing a consistant plan of food storage.
2. Two years ago, in the subdivision where I used to live, I established a CERT Team (I see has a Community Emergency Response Team CD available on Gary's website.). I think every community should establish a CERT Team, so they will have the training to be an effective rescuer.
3. Something else to be remembered in survival is that you don't have to survive alone. When the power is out and the Cell Phone towers are jammed or down, you've planned ahead and turn on your Ham Radio (either battery or solar powered) and you are able to connect with others. (Yes... I'm also a Ham Radio operator: KC0YSS )
